Grapefruit Diet
What is the Grapefruit Diet?
This diet has existed in the United States since the 1930’s and became popula in the 1970’s. It is also called the Hollywood diet. The diet is to give you a short term weight loss. No one claims ownership of the plan but instead it was circulated by word of mouth.
People who speak about the grapefruit diet often say that it contains a magical ingredient that is triggered by protein to burn fat and cause extreme amounts of weight loss. However the weight loss is due mostly to the fluid being drained.
Scientifically the diet contains fat burning enzymes. Where half a grapefruit is to be taken at every meal, also the caloric intake should be reduced to burn off the excess fat that you might have. The diet promises a weight loss of about 10 pounds during a 12 day diet. However it isn't intended to control weight for the long term.
Dieters are required to eat a small variety of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dieters are to drink black coffee and water. This diet is basically a low carbohydrate and moderate protein averaging a consumption of 800-1000 calories. However, people could lose weight simply by taking the grapefruit. What makes the grapefruit special specifically for fat burning is yet unclear. However the enzymes might be the reason why th fat burning occurs which can also be found in other citrus fruits.
While the grapefruit is very nutritious, it also reduces insulin levels and promotes and small weight loss. However there is no direct evidence that the grapefruit has fat burning enzymes nor is it a magic bullet for weight loss. The grapefruit diet has numerous pitfalls. First and foremost is, it isn't for long term weight loss. The limited variety of foods is very restrictive in helping dieters. They dieters may experience taste fatigue and bordom.
On a study conducted, the Florida Department of Citrus found that some weight loss was experienced by participants by up to 3 pounds in a span of 12 weeks with some losing 10. However the small study also found out that the participants weren't closely monitored as some of them were working out more intensively.
The diet limits the amount of fruits and vegetables, and encourages consuming meat. The diet is to be followed for a set number of days after which there is a break of one or two days. A 2004 study showed that this diet reduces 3-4 pounds in over 12 weeks.
In our conclusion, grapefruit does not contain that special ingredient to help people lose weight. It is seemingly important to note that you are more likely to enjoy it's taste rather than it causing you to lose weight.
