1 Million Units Sold Annually
Have you heard of Hydroxycut? If you haven’t, it happens to be the most popular weight loss supplement. In fact it is marketed as a nutritional supplement and as an aid to weight loss. It was cited in the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2009 and reports are that about 1 million units are sold annually.
The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning in 2009 to the effect that taking Hydroxycut has been associated with liver damage. One death was reported and the manufacturer was forced to recall the products.
Does not contain Ephedra
Hydroxycut does not contain ephedra and is available from most retailers, online or not. It is back on the shelves. The advertising surrounding it hinges on its ability to boost metabolism and to decrease hunger pangs.
The Ingredients
Because of its ingredients, Hydroxycut is also classified as a nutraceutical. Here are some of its ingredients:
• Garcinia cambogia – a small fruit native to India and other parts of Asia. It is extracted as hydroxycitric acid and is said to suppress appetite in animals.
• Gymnema sylvestre – an herb found in India which has been used for diabetes relief
• Chromium polynicotinate – because the body needs chromium but doesn’t get it in sufficient amounts, the USFDA developed this substance. It helps reduce blood glucose levels
• Caffeine – a common ingredient found in weight loss products and is intended to give energy, but some people claim feeling the jitters
• green tea – an antioxidant that is supposed to help strengthen the immune system.
Hydroxycut Line of Products
Hydroxycut has been endorsed by some medical personalities and university professors. The manufacturers have since developed a line of Hydroxycut products in varying forms and bearing different names:
• Hydroxycut • Caffeine-free Hydroxycut • Hydroxycut 24 • Hydroxycut Hardcore • Hydroxycut Max! (developed for female bodybuilders who participate in fitness competitions).
The Claims they Made
The manufacturers have claimed that their product is a fat burner when in fact there were no studies to prove this. The manufacturers were also involved in a legal claim which they settled by paying US$100,000 without admitting to any wrong doing.
On a web site, one user posted that he or she went from 115 to 107 pounds after two weeks, although some side effects were noticeable: dizziness, dry mouth, shaking, and the feeling of breaking into a sweat. Another poster said that he or she was on it for nine months. The first two months were amazing because there were a lot of pounds lost. Then the user said he or she went through a plateau and didn’t lose the pounds. The symptoms were getting worse so the poster stopped using it.
