What is the Macrobiotic Diet?
Macrobiotic diet is a dietary regime that involves eating grains and staple foods. The term macrobiotics was first coined by the writings of Hippocrates, describing people that were healthy. Herodotus, Aristotle and Galen used it as well.
This diet system stresses against overeating and eating highly processed or refined foods. This diet is frequently used as a means to combat cancer but this idea is disapproved by the American Cancer Society.
The philosophy of this diet is based on the Oriental principal of Yin and Yang which are relative qualities. The purpose of Macrobiotic diet is to determine this quality in the foods one eats. However for this reason most find it difficult to follow.
With this diet, there isn’t a need to count calories or individual nutrients. Many of the ingredients in a macrobiotic diet are primarily found in the Japanese and Chinese foods, such as in the Edo period of Japan and the Chee Soo therapy in the Chinese culture.
The macrobiotic diet is often times confused with veganism as the two are essentially the same, infact it isn't uncommon for vegan diets to have a version composing of a macrobiotic diet plan. The only difference is that Macrobiotics is allowed forms of meat. There have been numberous criticisms in the past, however, they weren't reputable. Such as Michio Kushi and George Ohsawa who once said that lung cancer can be derived from dairy foods as the combination with tobacco can trap tars and other ingredients which is contrary to our understanding of lung cancer and smoking.
