What is the Paleolithic Diet?

The Paleolithic diet is sometimes referred to the caveman diet because the diet is principally based on the wild animals and plants that cavemen consumed about 10,000 years ago. Most modern foods don't cater to such wild variety of plant and animals however it comes close.   The diet was popularized in the 1970’s by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin.

The premise is that modern humans are genetically adapted to the diet of their Paleolithic ancestors. The diet mainly serves to expose the modern man to a diet that is closer to his ancient counterpart in the Paleolithic era who were hunters and gatherers.

65% of the food energy should be derived from animals and 45% from plant foods. They recommend a diet high in protein (19% to 35%) and relatively low carbohydrates (22% to 40%) with a fat intake similar to or higher than what is found in western diets (28% to 56%). There are many proven health benefits to this diet and should be used in conjuction with exercise.

In Practice the paleolithis diet is a modern dietary regime that seeks to mimic the diet of pragricultural hunter and gatherers. Cultivated plants and domesticated animal meats are alternatives to the wild sources 10,000 years back.

The diet consists of foods that can be hunted, like meats and fish and can be gathered like eggs, fruits, and mushrooms. There are some sources that advise eating only lean cuts of meat and free from additives. Practicioners of this diet should derive 56 to 65% of their food energy from animal foods and therefore this diet is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
